Who We Are

ROTOR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening communities through mentorship, education, vocational training, workforce development, and service. We believe that when individuals are given practical skills, meaningful guidance, and the opportunity to succeed, they gain more than technical knowledge—they gain confidence, purpose, and the ability to create lasting change in their own lives and the lives of others. While many nonprofit organizations focus on education or mentorship alone, ROTOR is distinguished by its commitment to vocational trades. We believe learning a trade develops more than employable skills—it develops discipline, perseverance, responsibility, problem-solving, leadership, and pride in one's work.

Why ROTOR Exists

Every community is filled with individuals who have tremendous potential but may never discover it without opportunity, mentorship, and encouragement. ROTOR was founded on the belief that lives can be transformed when people are equipped with practical skills and surrounded by mentors who genuinely care about their success.Rather than simply preparing individuals for a job, ROTOR seeks to prepare them for life. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and community engagement, participants develop confidence, leadership, accountability, and a strong work ethic—qualities that strengthen families, workplaces, and entire communities.

Vocational Trades: Building Skills That Build Communities

Vocational education is at the heart of what makes ROTOR unique. We believe skilled trades offer lessons that cannot always be learned in a classroom alone. Working with your hands teaches patience, teamwork, accountability, creativity, resilience, and problem-solving while providing practical skills that can lead to meaningful careers. ROTOR introduces participants to a variety of vocational trades, exposing them to industries that continue to play an essential role in today's workforce and economy.Among those trades, blacksmithing holds a special place.Blacksmithing is one of the world's oldest skilled trades and an important part of our cultural heritage—but it is far more than a trade of the past. Today, blacksmiths fabricate architectural ironwork, restore historic landmarks, create custom gates and railings, forge tools, produce public art, and provide specialized metalwork for residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial projects.At ROTOR, we believe preserving blacksmithing means more than honoring its history—it means ensuring it continues to thrive as a respected, relevant, and economically viable profession. By teaching blacksmithing alongside other vocational trades, we help preserve centuries of craftsmanship while preparing individuals with practical skills that remain valuable in today's workforce.

Creating a Pathway Into the Skilled Trades

One of the ways ROTOR creates lasting impact is through its Pre-Apprenticeship Program. Designed to prepare participants for careers in the skilled trades, the program combines hands-on instruction, mentorship, workplace readiness, and foundational trade skills.

For individuals who demonstrate the commitment, character, and skill required, the Pre-Apprenticeship Program can become a pathway into a registered apprenticeship with JDW Blacksmith & Co. Rather than simply introducing participants to vocational trades, ROTOR prepares them for real career opportunities while JDW Blacksmith & Co. provides qualified participants the opportunity to continue their development through a registered apprenticeship.
